Parachute Flare

Painted on the canopy of a parachute flare, this artwork depicts the flags of the U.S., South Korea and the United Nations. It also illustrates the insignia of the 5th Air Force and some of the USAF units that were based at K-16 in 1952.

These flags were handmade by a Korean woman for Airman 1st Class Carol Roberts. In addition to South Korea and the United States, 15 nations contributed military forces to the UN Command in Korea, while five more sent medical teams. Of these, Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Greece, South Africa and Thailand sent air force units.

The 5th Air Force was the main component of the Far East Air Forces (FEAF) during the Korean War.
