The P-44 was a development of the P-43 with a Pratt & Whitney R-2180-1 of 1,400 hp. An order for 80 P-44s was replaced by an order for 80 P-43As when the design order for the P-47 was issued on Sept. 6, 1940, seven days before the P-44 project was canceled.
