The Vultee YA-19 was an Air Corps service test version of the company financed V11. Seven aircraft were ordered in the summer of 1938, and it - made its first flight onJan. 27, 1939. The YA-19 was similar to the Northrop A-17A; however, it carried a crew of three: pilot, observer/gunner, and bombardier/photographer. The aircraft was powered by a 1200-hp Twin Wasp radial engine and had six .30-cal. machine guns installed -- four forward-firing machine guns operated by the pilot, one .30-cal. flexible machine gun manned by the rear gunner and a ventral-mount .30-cal. machine gun operated by the bombardier/photographer. The YA-19 had a rather unusual tail. The horizontal stabilizer was on top of the fuselage and completely forward of the vertical stabilizer. The vertical stabilizer/rudder was undersized and caused directional stability problems (yaw axis).
The Air Corps ordered the YA-19s to gather test data to compare against the twin engine light attack planes coming into favor with the Army general staff (i.e. Douglas A-20). The twin engine designs were clearly superior to the single engine attack aircraft in speed, armament and bomb load. As a result, no additional orders were placed for the YA-19.
After service testing was completed. Five YA-19s were assigned to the 17th Attack Group at March Field, Calif. The aircraft were only assigned briefly before being transferred to the Canal Zone as utility transport/liaison aircraft. While in operational service the aircraft were designated A-19s. The A-19 was never used in combat and was quickly replaced by more capable attack aircraft in the early 1940s.
Two YA-19s were modified to test various engine configurations. One aircraft was fitted with a Lycoming O-1230 (12 cylinder opposed) engine. The vertical stabilizer on this aircraft, designated XA-19A, was also enlarged. Later, the engine was changed to an upgraded version of the Pratt & Whitney Twin Wasp and designated XA-19C. A second YA-19 was used as an engine test bed for the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 radial engine and designated XA-19B.
