CURTISS A-40

Posted 12/31/2008 Printable Fact Sheet

The Curtiss A-40 was developed as an Army version of the XSB3C-1 designed for the U.S. Navy. The aircraft was to be a large single-seat aircraft using the 2,300-hp Wright R-3350-8 Cyclone radial engine. The Army Air Corps became disinterested in dive bombers after a few types (i.e. A-24) already in service performed poorly in combat. The A-40 project was canceled before any aircraft were built.
