DAYTON, Ohio -- Gnome B-9 on display in the Research & Development Gallery at the National Museum of the United States Air Force. (U.S. Air Force photo)
Note: This engine is located in the Research & Development Gallery on a controlled-access portion of Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. The gallery will close until further notice beginning May 1, 2013, as part of budget reduction requirements due to sequestration.
The French Gnome B-9 air-cooled engine of 100 hp was built in the United States under license by the General Vehicle Co. of Long Island City, N.Y. It was a "Monosoupape" type in that it had only one valve per cylinder.
The B-9 was installed in several types of U.S.-built planes, primarily high-speed pursuit trainers such as the standard E-1.
