9/22/2006 - DAYTON, Ohio -- More than 30 aircraft will fly to the National Museum of the United States Air Force on Oct. 7-8 to participate in the first-ever Liaison Aircraft Fly-in.

The fly-in, scheduled for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday on the turf runway behind the museum, is free and open to the public.

Liaison aircraft, including L-2, L-3, L-4, L-5, L-16, L-17, L-18, L-19 and L-21 models, will participate in fly-bys and static displays. Several historical military vehicles also will be on site during the event.

Aircraft featured at the fly-in were used by all branches of the U.S. military from the late 1930s until the early 1970s, and many were modifications of existing civilian light aircraft. Often unarmed, liaison aircraft performed a variety of missions, including reconnaissance, light transport, courier duties, medical evacuation, rescue, forward air control and artillery spotting.

Those interested in attending the fly-in should enter the museum gate off Springfield Pike and follow the signs to the event area behind the museum. Visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets. Food will be available for purchase.

Pilot registration for this event is full; however, the museum is still accepting registrations for military vehicles. Please call (937) 255-8046, ext. 492, for information.

The National Museum of the United States Air Force is located on Springfield Pike, six miles northeast of downtown Dayton. It is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week (closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day). Admission and parking are free.
