8/29/2012 - DAYTON, Ohio -- Home school children, ages 3-18, can participate in educational activities during Fall Home School Day on Oct. 1 at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force.

Admission to the museum and most activities are free; however, advance registration is recommended. Registration opens at 9 a.m. on Sept. 5, and forms and additional information are available at http://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/education/homeschool/index.asp. Space is limited, and registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Educational programming includes:
  • Things with Wings: Ages 3-5; free
  • We All Fall Down: Ages 5-6; free
  • Get Charged: Ages 6-8; free (presented by a scientist from the Wright-Patterson AFB "Wizards of Wright" program)
  • Bird's Eye View: Ages 7-9; free
  • Fun with Chemistry: Ages 8-10; free (presented by a scientist from the Wright-Patterson AFB "Wizards of Wright" program)
  • Hot Air Science: Ages 9-12; free
  • Eyes in Space: Air Force Spy Satellites: Ages 11+; free
  • How the Wright Brothers Invented the Airplane: Ages 11+; free (presented by an Education Specialist from the National Park Service)
  • Fuel Cells: Ages 11-14; free (presented by the Wright-Patterson AFB "Wizards of Wright" program)
  • Take Flight with Aero Lab: Ages 12-15; $5 materials free
  • Advanced Rocketry: Ages 14-18; free
Guided tours, scavenger hunts and aerospace demonstration stations also are available for the entire family. Those who are interested may come for a full day or just one activity. Visitors may also visit the Presidential Gallery, check out the museum's newest artifact -- the Shuttle Crew Compartment Trainer, or choose to watch an IMAX movie or ride the Morphis flight simulator at a discounted price.

If you wish to pack your lunch, a picnic area is available outside the museum. Food, snacks and drinks (including water) may not be brought into the building. A café is available on the second floor if you prefer to purchase your food at the museum. Be advised that the outside picnic area is a considerable walking distance away from the activities. Be sure to adjust your timing accordingly.

The National Museum of the United States Air Force is located on Springfield Street, six miles northeast of downtown Dayton. It is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day). Admission and parking are free.
