9/4/2012 - DAYTON, Ohio -- Learn the basics about lighter-than-air flight with free educational activities during Family Day at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Sept. 22.
Long before humans learned to build airplanes, they had taken to the skies in aircraft that were lifted by heated air and other gases. The museum will look at this great achievement with a variety of aerospace demonstration stations throughout the day.
These aviation topics are appropriate for all ages. Activities will include demonstrations and hands-on activities dealing with the properties of air and air pressure as well as buoyancy and density. Visitors will be able to watch model hot air balloons soar to the ceiling in the center of the museum's second building. These balloons are six to nine feet tall and made of tissue paper. Visitors also will have the opportunity to build and fly cardstock "canard" gliders from 1:30-3 pm.
In addition, there will be a storytime program for younger visitors at 11:30 a.m. and again at 1:15 p.m. that will feature stories of flight and include making a paper hot air balloon.
Family Day is free and visitors of all ages may participate in these aviation-related activities located throughout the museum galleries. No advance reservations are necessary. Call the Education Division at (937) 255-4646 for additional information.
The National Museum of the United States Air Force is located on Springfield Street, six miles northeast of downtown Dayton. It is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day). Admission and parking are free.
