Band of Flight joins Dayton Philharmonic for Patriot Day Concert

9/4/2012 - WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio -- Mark your calendars for a memorable night of musical collaboration as the Band of Flight joins forces with the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra for the Patriot Day Concert at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 11.
A fixture at the museum for years, the Band of Flight is reorganizing from 45 members to 15 in 2013, so this year's concert will represent the final large-scale collaboration of the Dayton Philharmonic and the Band of Flight.
The range of emotions -- from heartache to resolve -- felt on and since Sept. 11, 2001, will be explored in this year's program. Highlights of the program include "Jupiter" from The Planets by Gustav Holst, a moving tribute to United Airlines Flight 93 titled "A Field in Pennsylvania" by Nancy Bloomer Duessen, and Aaron Copland's" Lincoln Portrait."
In a first for the Patriot Day Concert, the powerful brass sections of the Dayton Philharmonic and the Band of Flight will be featured in a piece commissioned especially for this event. Audiences at this year's show will witness the world premier performance of "The Limits of Remembrance" by Band of Flight resident composer/arranger Tech. Sgt. Scott Wise.
Neal Gittleman, Dayton Philharmonic Music Director and Principal Conductor, looks forward to the joint effort.
"Dayton is lucky to have two such top-drawer professional musical ensembles. The mix of rousing patriotic music plus elegiac and contemplative music to honor those lost on Sept. 11, 2001, makes for a deeply moving and inspiring experience for everyone."
Band of Flight Commander and Conductor 1st Lt. Daniel W. Boothe is also energized by the opportunity to work with both ensembles.
"It is such a privilege to share the stage with the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra. When you see the mix of blue and black attire on the stage, you realize you are experiencing a truly powerful collaboration."
This concert is hosted by the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force and sponsored by Booz Allen Hamilton and Butt Construction Co.
