Mask Policy:
In accordance with the updated guidance released by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Department of Defense (DoD) and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force will require all visitors to wear face masks indoors effective July 30, 2021 until further notice.

Visitors ages three and up will be required to wear masks while indoors at the museum. This policy applies to all visitors, staff and volunteers regardless of vaccination status. Visitors may wear their own masks or a free paper mask will be provided. Cloth masks will also be available for purchase in the Museum Store.

Classes & Workshops

The museum offers a variety of programs with learning opportunities related to science, technology, engineering and math, as well as history (and other social studies fields).

 

All of our programs are free. Some materials for these programs are provided through the generosity of the Air Force Museum Foundation, Inc.  (Federal endorsement is not implied). 

These programs are offered at the museum only and require a minimum of 25 students and a maximum of 36 students per session.  For larger groups, please contact the Education Division directly before scheduling at 937-255-4646, 937-255-4652.

All programs meet national academic content standards

Grade 2-12

Note: These programs are restricted to students currently in the grade levels listed below.

Coding with Kids

 

Introduction to the basic concept of coding using a child friendly robot.

 

Grade Level: 2-3

Duration: 1 hour

Cost: Free

 

Rescue Mission Math

Students will learn about helicopters and the four forces of flight. They will play a rescue game to practice their new knowledge. The game also teaches how to chart coordinates on a graph, data entry on a spreadsheet, probability skills and teamwork.

 

Grade Level: 4-5

Principles of Flight

 

Explores basic aerodynamic principles.  Student will build and test fly balsa wood aircraft.

Kites

 

Discover the interesting history of kites and the many types of kites, then build a sled kite. May include a segment to determine altitude and forces on the kite. Flying time will be on-your-own at teacher's discretion.

 

Grade Level: 4-6

Presidents and Their Planes             

 

Students will receive a 15 minute briefing on the museum's one-of-a-kind collection of Presidential Aircraft and a tour of the gallery including four walk-thru former Air Force Ones.

Code Breakers

 

Students will learn about the history of code making and breaking from ancient Egypt to the present day uses for codes. After obtaining content, students will work together to create and break codes collectively.  Paper "codes" are available online.

 

Grade Level: 5-8

Kite Math                        

Students will build a sled kite and use it to explore and use formulas to compute areas and perimeters of common polygons. Flying time will be on-your-own at teacher's discretion.

Intro to the Engineering Design Process

 

 

 Students will learn the steps of the Engineering Design Process by building and testing a model CubeSat.

 

Grade Level: 6-8

The Holocaust: Prejudice and Memory

 Museum only

 

Students will tour the Holocaust exhibit and see photographs and artifacts and hear the memories of local people who personally experienced some aspect of the Holocaust. This program stresses the importance of tolerance. It is limited to groups no larger than 80 students and is available on Tuesday or Thursday mornings at 10 a.m.

 

The program lasts two hours and cost is free.

All Holocaust Programs must be scheduled through the Education Division.
