Volunteer of the Quarter recognized

DAYTON, Ohio -- Col. Andrew K. Weaver, 88th Air Base Wing Commander, presented Centerville resident Kevin Steinke with the Team Wright-Patt "Volunteer of the Quarter" award for the fourth quarter on March 2 at the National Museum of the United States Air Force.

Steinke was chosen for this award because he developed a new volunteer position at the museum. Due to the many special events held after museum operating hours, there was a need for volunteers to assist with security and safety.

"Kevin's foresight to help develop a new volunteer position has been a great help to the Operations and Special Events Divisions," said Operations Division Chief Dan Dobbyn. "This program will prove to be successful and meaningful for all concerned."

Steinke was selected by Dobbyn to facilitate an evening event coordinator need. He met with museum staff to determine specific duties, developed the job description, sent a letter to all volunteers who may be interested in the position and developed a training module.

Since the implementation of the new volunteer position, Steinke has served along with staff to train for the new position. He is in charge of scheduling volunteers for events, monitoring performance, filling cancellations, and reporting conflicts or problems to museum staff.

"Volunteers are an essential part of the museum," said Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Charles D. Metcalf. "We appreciate all the skills and talents they bring. Without them, the museum would not be able to operate as it does."

About 450 people volunteer at the National Museum of the United States Air Force in most every division and activity. For more information about volunteering, please visit our Volunteer page.

The National Museum of the United States Air Force is located on Springfield Pike, six miles northeast of downtown Dayton. It is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day). Admission and parking are free.
