Fall Home School Day postponed Published Sept. 24, 2013 By Sarah Swan National Museum of the U.S. Air Force DAYTON, Ohio -- UPDATE (10/6/13): Fall Home School Day, which was originally scheduled for Oct. 7, has been postponed and will be rescheduled at a later day. Home school children, ages 3-18, can participate in educational activities during Fall Home School Day on Oct. 7 at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force. Admission to the museum and activities are free, and there is no advance registration. Additional information is available at http://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/education/homeschool/index.asp. Space for the programs is limited. World-famous boomerang expert and motivational speaker Gary Broadbent will present "Boomerangs Keep Coming Back" at 11 a.m. in Carney Auditorium. Other auditorium-style presentations include "Fundamentals of Flight" at 9:30 a.m., "The SR-71 Blackbird" at 1:15 p.m. and "It's Science, Not Magic" at 2:45 p.m. Subject matter is targeted mostly towards students in grades 5 and above; however, the entire family is encouraged to attend. Take-home, hands-on extension projects will be distributed to those in attendance. Seating in the auditorium will open 20 minutes before each program begins. In addition, four hands-on classes will be offered in the museum's Learning Center: Modular Robotics: Grades 1-3 (9:15 a.m.) Lasers and Optics: Grades 3-4 (10:45 a.m.) Cryptology: Grades 5-8 (1 p.m.) Orbital Mechanics: Grades 9-12 (2:30 p.m.) The Learning Center has a limited seating capacity, so participation will be limited to youngsters of the correct age level only (no siblings or parents). Line numbers will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis beginning at 9 a.m. on Oct. 7 in the museum lobby. Guided tours, storytimes, scavenger hunts and aerospace demonstration stations also are available for the entire family. Those who are interested may come for a full day or just one activity. Visitors may also choose to watch a movie in the new digital 3D theatre or ride the interactive simulators (these two activities do have a cost). If you wish to pack your lunch, a picnic area is available outside the museum. Food, snacks and drinks (including water) may not be brought into the building. A café is available on the second floor if you prefer to purchase your food at the museum. Be advised that the outside picnic area is a considerable walking distance away from the activities. Be sure to adjust your timing accordingly. The National Museum of the United States Air Force is located on Springfield Street, six miles northeast of downtown Dayton. It is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day). Admission and parking are free.
