Collections Overview

The museum collection involves several divisions, including Collection Management, Research and Restoration Division. The Collection Management Division provides stewardship for the museum system’s considerable aircraft and artifact collection, ensuring accountability for all U.S. Air Force historical property, while the Research Division manages the museum’s ever-expanding document and imagery collection. The Restoration Division restores aerospace vehicles to historically accurate and visually striking levels using a variety of skills, ranging from machine and woodworking expertise to precision craftsmanship in sheet metal and painting.

Aircraft Available for Loan

Image of the nose of an aircraft in the hangar. The National Museum of the USAF manages more than 2,900 aircraft on loan to military and civilian organizations all over the world.  Occasionally these organizations contact us about aircraft they are no longer interested in borrowing.  We call these aircraft “excess to need” and NMUSAF is actively looking for new homes for them.

Please note: organizations interested in borrowing these or any aircraft from NMUSAF must meet loan eligibility requirements.

Exchange Program

The National Museum of the United States Air Force (NMUSAF) Exchange Program’s function is to enhance the USAF National Historical Collection through the authorized acquisition of items and services.  It is a valuable tool for NMUSAF to carry out its mission to tell the Air Force story through curatorial stewardship and educational outreach efforts.
