Museum restoration crews moved the North American P-51D Mustang and the Republic P-47D Bubble Canopy Version back into the WWII Gallery on Aug. 14, 2018. Several WWII era aircraft were temporarily placed throughout the museum to provide adequate space for the Memphis Belle exhibit opening events.

Fourth Building Gallery Overviews

During a training mission from Malmstrom AFB on Feb. 2, 1970, this F-106 entered an uncontrollable flat spin forcing the pilot, Maj. (Ret.) Gary Foust, to eject. Unpiloted, the aircraft recovered on its own and made a gentle belly landing in a field near Big Sandy, Mont.

Former Pilot of SAM 26000 Major (Ret.) Lew Newhard

USAF Lt. Col.(Ret.) Alton W. Yates, received national and international acclaim while serving in the U.S. Air Force at the Aeromedical Field Laboratory. He rode high speed Rocket Sleds and participated in numerous Aerospace Research experiments between 1955 and 1959 in the initial days of America's Space Program. The experiments were designed to pave the way for America's first manned space flights.

Yates is cited by the U.S. Air Force for risking his life more than 65 times for science.

This is an interview with Aerospace and Civil Rights Pioneer, USAF Lt. Col.(Ret.) Alton W. Yates at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force.

Lt. Col.(Ret.) Alton Yates Interview

This interview is with Holocaust Survivor Samuel Heider and was recorded in March 2017, at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force by Ken LaRock.

Sam was born in 1924 in the small village of Biejkow, one of six children of Yankel and Chaja Hajder. Unlike most Polish Jews, the Hajders had been farmers for generations and owned their own land. In 1941 the farm was confiscated by the German occupation forces, and the family moved to the ghetto in nearby Bialobrzegi. In 1942 the ghetto was liquidated, and Sam’s parents went to their deaths at Treblinka. Sam survived because he was in a work camp at Radom. All he had left of his family was a photograph of his sister, which — remarkably — he was able to keep with him by hiding it under his arm, even in the showers. He still has the photograph. Sam and his wife, Phyllis, also a survivor, have three children and five grandchildren together.

"Prejudice & Memory: A Holocaust Exhibit" is made up of the photographs, artifacts and memories of people who now live in the Dayton, Ohio, area. Among the contributors are concentration camp survivors and their families, liberators and "righteous Gentiles" (non-Jews who helped Jews during the Holocaust).

It is one of the few such exhibits in the U.S. compiled to demonstrate one community's connection with this terrible event and to affirm the belief that learning about the Holocaust is the first step toward preventing its recurrence.

Grumman designed the versatile Albatross to meet a U.S. Navy requirement for an amphibious utility aircraft which could also operate from snow and ice with skis. During the Korean War, Albatrosses rescued almost 1,000 United Nations personnel from coastal waters and rivers, often behind enemy lines. They also made numerous dramatic and hazardous rescues in Southeast Asia, on occasion taxiing many miles over rough, open water when unable to take off.

The prototype first flew on Oct. 24, 1947, and soon after the U.S. Air Force ordered a quantity for air-sea rescue duties as SA-16As. Grumman delivered 297 A models to the Air Force, mostly for the Air Rescue Service. In 1962 the USAF changed the designation to HU-16.

In 1955 Grumman developed an improved version with a 16 1/2 foot increase in wingspan and larger aileron and tail surfaces. Beginning in 1957, many A models were converted to the B configuration with these improvements.

The HU-16 on display was one of the last operational USAF Albatrosses. The aircraft established a world altitude record for twin-engine amphibians when it reached 32,883 feet on July 4, 1973. The crew for this record setting flight included Lt. Col. Chuck Manning, pilot; Maj. Paul Schaefer, co-pilot; and Tech. Sgt. Ed Schindler, flight mechanic. Two weeks later, the aircraft was retired and flown to the museum.

75th Anniversary of the Doolittle Tokyo Raid

Aircraft moved from the Air Force Museum at Patterson Field down State Route 444 to the new home at historic Wright Field during 1970.

Thanks to the Air Force Museum Foundation, a philanthropic, non-profit organization founded in 1960, a new $6.5 million museum building opened in 1971 on a 400-acre site at historic Wright Field. President Richard M. Nixon highlighted formal dedication ceremonies in September that year. Public contributions covered the entire cost of the 800-by-240-foot building, which was designed especially for display of aircraft and provided indoor protection for nearly 100 aircraft. The museum added a $1 million visitor reception center in 1976, again through contributions made by the public to the foundation.
