Panel 44 is a commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial containing the names of 337 American service members who died between March 9 -16, 1968.The Panel was originally produced in 1982 to go on display in Washington D.C. but was ultimately not placed because of a crack.
“A Force for Good – Department of the Air Force Humanitarian Missions” - New Permanent Exhibit
Throughout the Air Force’s history it has played an integral role in Humanitarian missions around the world. The museum’s latest permanent exhibit highlights five Humanitarian operations with Air Delivery, Goodwill Missions, Relief & Rescue, Global Firefighting and Critical Care.
75th Anniversary of the Department of the Air Force - New Special Exhibit Now Open!
Innovate, Accelerate, Thrive: Celebrating the U.S. Department of the Air Force at 75 conveys how the U.S. Department of the Air Force has impacted the world not only through the defense of the United States, but also through technological and social progress that impacted people around the world. Through the use of six videos and 30 photos, visitors will learn about the Air Force’s involvement in developing technologies like the oxygen mask, LASERs, and the Global Positioning System (GPS). Topics related to social progress include gay rights advocacy, equal opportunity employment, and women in leadership. This exhibit is open in the museum’s Cold War Art Gallery through September 2022.
New Aircraft Arrival: KC-135
After several days of questionable weather conditions, KC-135 #60-0329 arrived on historic Wright Field in late April to join the museum’s permanent collection. This aircraft is significant to the history of the Air Force for its unprecedented 1967 tri-level aerial refueling over the Gulf of Tonkin, refueling a total of two Navy KA-3 tankers, two Navy f-8s and two Navy F-4s. The crew earned the 1967 Mackay Trophy for its heroic efforts to save the crews of these aircraft. Among distinguished guests on hand that day were the Commander and co-pilot from this mission, then Maj. John Casteel and Capt. Richard Trail. The aircraft is on display in the Air Park.
Vietnam SALUTE! - Aug 18-21
The museum will host the American Veterans Traveling Tribute (AVTT) Vietnam Memorial Aug. 18-21. This 80% replica of the Vietnam Wall bears the names of more than 58,000 service members killed in Southeast Asia. As a backdrop for this memorial exhibit the museum will host a B-52 Fly-Over, Flight One Pop-Up Concerts, historical displays, veteran presentations and more.
In conjunction with this memorial event, the museum will have Panel 44 on display in the 4th building from Aug. 16-24. A-1H – Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) Skyraider
The restoration of the A-1H Skyraider is underway and scheduled to be complete next year.
Atlas 9
The museum is excited to debut the Mercury Atlas 9 (MA-9, designated also Faith 7), the fourth and final manned orbital flight of the Mercury program. This is tentatively scheduled to go on display in the Missile Gallery later this year.
