First Air Force all-female flight

The first all-female USAF transatlantic flight occurred on May 9, 1983, when an 18th Military Airlift Squadron crew flew a C-141B Starlifter from McGuire Air Force Base, New Jersey, to Rhein-Main Air Base, Germany. The first Air Force all-female aircrew included: Captain Guiliana Sangiorgio, aircraft commander; Captain Barbara E. Akin, first pilot; First Lieutenant Terri A. Ollinger, copilot; Technical Sergeant Donna L. Wertz, instructor flight engineer; Staff Sergeant Denise J. Meunier, flight engineer; Sergeant Mary Eiche, loadmaster; and Airman First Class Bernadette C. Botti, loadmaster.

Eileen Collins

Upon her graduation from Air Force Test Pilot School in 1990, Major Eileen Collins was selected by NASA to train as a Space Shuttle pilot. After setting several milestones during her Air Force career, Collins went on to serve as the first woman to pilot and to command a Space Shuttle.

On September 11, 2001 First Lieutenant Heather Penney and her commanding officer, Colonel Marc Sasseville received one-way orders to stop United Airlines Flight 93 as it headed towards Washington, DC. After sweeping the DC airspace for over an hour, the pilots learned the passengers had forced the aircraft down in a Pennsylvania field.

GPS Exhibit

The new GPS exhibit, titled “Global Positioning System and its Impact!” occupies nearly 700 sq. ft. of floor space and takes the shape of a full-size current replica GPS satellite. Displayed on a very large floor graphic of the Earth, the central satellite unit includes eight interpretive panels where the satellite’s solar panels would be.

The 'X-1' Mustang

DAYTON, Ohio -- The 'X-1' Mustang is matte-pearlescent painted with a jet cockpit that includes a single-driver ejection seat in the center of the vehicle, short shifter, flight stick and advanced instrumentation panel. The X-1 also has a concealed motorized steering wheel, custom foot pedals, GPS transponder and the innovative dash is equipped with a touch screen monitor and sensor pack that displays night and thermal vision. The 4.6 liter engine includes 3-valve Ford Racing heads, cold air intake, hot rod cams, and long tube headers creating 500hp. The X-1 was one of the Air Force's mobile marketing assets that toured high schools and a variety of Air Force sponsored events as part of the 2009 Super Car Tour.
