Maj. Bernard F. Fisher

From World War I through the Korean War, Airmen received the same Medal of Honor as the U.S. Army. In 1960 Congress created several medals specifically for the USAF. The design for the highest of these three, the Air Force Medal of Honor, was approved in 1965. The first person to receive the new Air Force Medal of Honor was Maj. Bernard F. Nels Running congratulates Eugene Mundy, who had just received the Korean War Service Medal from the Republic of Korea during a ceremony at the U.S. Soldiers’ and Airmen’s Home in Washington, D.C., in April 2001. Convair B-36 Peacemaker

Rear view of an engine on the port wing of a Convair B-36 Peacemaker bomber aircraft undergoing maintenance. Powered by six Pratt & Whitney R-4360 engines, the B-36J cruised at 230 mph, but for additional bursts of speed its four General Electric J47s increased the maximum speed to 435 mph. The “Other War” – “Out-of-Country”

In July 1966, USAF FACS began flying reconnaissance missions over North Vietnam's lower southern panhandle. Like their counterparts in South Vietnam, FACs in the North flew continual daily reconnaissance flights over the same terrain to become familiar with activity down below. When they located a military target, they directed air strikes against it. This picture shows the light, unarmed O-1 Bird dog spotter plane flying over North Vietnam in August 1966. The growing enemy air defenses soon became a serious threat to the slow flying FACs. (U.S. Air Force)

Pat O'Leary

The Pat Line, headquartered in Marseilles, was named after one of its commanders, Dr. Albert-Marie Edmond Guérisse (alias Pat O'Leary). Betrayed by a traitor in March 1943, Dr. Guérisse suffered brutal Gestapo torture, but did not reveal any names. Sent to a concentration camp and sentenced to death, he somehow survived the war.
