Election day at the 91st Aero Squadron Airdrome at Gondreville, France, in July 1918. There was an election and demonstration in an endeavor to appoint an officer in charge of the mess for officers. George C. Kenny, 1st Lieutenant, was the candidate but because of a few technical errors in the rules and regulations drawn up especially for the occasion, the candidate was not legally elected. George C. Kenny

George C. Kenny achieved his first aerial victory on Sept. 15, 1918, and was awarded the Silver Star for his actions. On Oct. 9, he again showed great heroism as he flew in support of the Meuse-Argonne Offensive near Jametz, France. Frank Luke Jr. enlisted in the Aviation Section of the U.S. Signal Corps (A.S.S.C.) on Sept. 23, 1917. After receiving pilot training and being commissioned a Second Lieutenant, he was assigned to the 27th Aero Squadron in France. Luke was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, which is on exhibit in the museum's Early Years Gallery. Attached to the inside cover of this notebook is a photo of Luke in uniform, and handwritten above his photograph is: Frank Luke Jr. 2nd Lt. A.S.S.C. 147th Aero Squadron, Operations Office

This image depicts the meager accommodations afforded the 147th Aero Squadron while serving in the Toul sector on the Western Front. This tent was home to the squadron’s Operations Office in May-June 1918. At the time, the pilots of the 147th were fresh from training at Issoudun and had just received their first French-built Nieuport 28 airplanes.
