Bell P-39
Bell P-39s in May 1943 at Wideawake Field, Ascension Island. Located in the Atlantic midway between Brazil and Africa, Ascension was of great strategic importance to the ATC. Problems of ferrying aircraft across the Atlantic were eased greatly when an airfield was opened on the island in July 1942. (U.S. Air Force photo)
