Korean War
One of the Yellow Sea Islands inside enemy territory only a mile from the mouth of the Yalu River that were occupied by UN forces. The islands served as a haven for U.S. fliers whose airplanes were damaged over North Korea. The remains of an F-80 jet fighter are seen here. C-47s landed on the beaches at low tide to transport men and cargo and to pick up any flyers forced to land on the island. (U.S. Air Force photo)
