USAF Rescue Coordination Center
The USAF Rescue Coordination Center at Scott Air Force Base, Ill., coordinates military and civilian search and rescue operations in the 48 contiguous states and provides assistance in Canada and Mexico. It also operates the U.S. mission control center for the international COSPAS/SARSAT system, "listening" for distress signals from ships and aircraft via satellite communications links. In 1990 the center recorded its 10,000th life saved since it opened in 1974. (U.S. Air Force photo)
