Neutrality League Announcement No. 2, 1914
Britain's decision to declare war on Germany on Aug. 4, 1914, was polarizing. The Neutrality League, founded by Sir Norman Angell, appealed to the masses though newspaper advertisements. This ad, published on Aug. 5, 1914, in The Daily Citizen urged Englishmen to reconsider the arguments for going to war. Though the Neutrality League's campaign was initially successful, raising over £2,300 for their cause (worth about $280,000 in 2014), the League had run out of steam -- and support -- by 1915.
