Frank Luke Jr. enlisted in the Aviation Section of the U.S. Signal Corps (A.S.S.C.) on Sept. 23, 1917. After receiving pilot training and being commissioned a Second Lieutenant, he was assigned to the 27th Aero Squadron in France. Luke was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, which is on exhibit in the museum's Early Years Gallery. Attached to the inside cover of this notebook is a photo of Luke in uniform, and handwritten above his photograph is: Frank Luke Jr. 2nd Lt. A.S.S.C.
