Eddie V. Rickenbacker WWI Diary
Capt. Edward V. Rickenbacker's 1918 wartime diary entry. (05/03/1918). While patrolling over the American sector, one of our patrols led by Capt. Peterson attacked 5 Huns shooting one down in flames but doing the fight, we lost our first man. Lt. [Charles W.] Chapman. He was shot down in flames. Also all the boys feel very blue but same must be expected.
