Eddie V. Rickenbacker WWI Diary
Very Sad Day My ear was feeling very bad this A.M. so I stayed off the patrol. During the patrol it seems they were just ready to leave when some Huns appeared over them so the leader started diving. Lt. Walter Smyth and Lt. [Alexander B.] Bruce collided in the dive. Lt. Smyth’s wings were torn off leaving both spiraling towards Mother Earth…both being killed instantly. It’s terribly hard for Lt Smyth’s Dear Old Mother will never be able to live thru same.
