Eddie V. Rickenbacker WWI Diary
<10th Victory> The attack opened up at 2:00 A.M. with a terrible barrage. We were ordered to attack balloons before daylight. Left the camp at 5:20 A.M. with landing flares then flew to the Front at 1,000 meters. It was a most wonderful sight, seemed as though there were millions of guns going from Rheims to Lunéville. Met one Fokker north of Verdun, came directly at each other firing both guns. My propeller was shot away and was just able to land at Verdun.
