Enlisted Pilots
MSgt George Holmes (far left) became a pilot in 1921 and rose in rank to lieutenant colonel during WWII. He chose to revert to his former rank of master sergeant when the war ended. Holmes continued serving as a sergeant pilot in the USAF until he retired in 1957. Also pictured are former sergeant pilot Chester Colby (center, who retained his commission) and sergeant pilot MSgt Tom Rafferty (right), who earned his wings in 1933. Rafferty was killed in a crash in 1950.
