Maj. Gen. (Ret.) John Borling "Return and Renewal with Honor: Messages for All of Us" Sept. 13, 2013 - 1 p.m. Maj. Gen. (Ret.) John Borling is a highly decorated fighter pilot (Silver and Bronze Stars, Purple Hearts and more) who served 37 years throughout the world in high-level command and staff positions. In his new book, TAPS ON THE WALLS: Poems from the Hanoi Hilton (Master Wings Publishing LLC, an imprint of the Pritzker Military Library), he shares his story and the poetry/prose he mentally composed and kept memorized during his six and a half year incarceration in Hanoi. He tapped his creations, with themes very relevant to today, through thick walls to fellow POWs using a special, but forbidden, prison tap code to "make time an ally" and provide legacy for his wife in case he didn't survive. A native Chicagoan, former White House Fellow, Air Force Academy and National War College graduate, he is much in demand as a speaker and very active in business and civic pursuits in Chicago and throughout the nation. Borling will speak about how and why poetry sustained him through his POW experience and its relevance today; commitment to duty and liberty, freedom and service; his life and service in the United States Air Force and private sector; and what the future holds.
