When the Japanese attacked the Philippines, Causey was the flight line maintenance chief of the 20th Air Base Group at Nichols Field. Causey survived the Battle of Bataan, an attack from a guard on the Death March, and three years in a prison camp before being loaded onto a hell ship.
For two weeks, Causey, along with nearly 1,800 other American POWs, were packed aboard the Japanese ship Arisan Maru on a course from Manila to Japan. On October 24, 1944, a US submarine torpedoed and sank the transport in the South China Sea. Causey, along with all but nine POWs aboard, died in the attack, marking it as the largest loss of American lives at sea.
