Alert Facility Support

Missile alert facilities require around-the-clock security and maintenance support. At Minuteman II sites, an enlisted facility manager oversaw all topside operations to support the combat crew and the missile system.

Two enlisted flight security controllers monitored the alert facility and all ten missiles, with one in the above-ground security control room at all times. They also made sure arriving personnel had correct pass codes and identification, and each supervised a two-member armed security team. A cook prepared four meals a day for all on-site personnel.

Maintenance crews visited Minuteman sites frequently. Two types of maintenance squadrons took care of the Minuteman system. A field maintenance unit handled the sites' test and support equipment, plus hydraulic and pneumatic systems, while an operational maintenance squadron took care of the missiles and the sites' electrical, surveillance, and security equipment.
