Command Chief: All should embrace ‘I Can Save My Own Life’ policy Published May 31, 2007 By By Airman Basic Evan Carter 36th Wing Public Affairs Andersen Air Force Base, Guam -- Chief Master Sgt. Saniford "Bud" Andree, Jr., recently became the 36th Wing Command Chief succeeding the former Command Chief Master Sgt. Robert Wicks. Chief Andree comes from the 354th Fighter Wing at Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska, where he served as the superintendent for the 354th Operations Group. Here, he is the primary advisor to the commander on all enlisted issues. "I'm excited to be here at Andersen," said Chief Andree. "I will ensure my office works hard for our Airmen and I plan to aid the commander in taking this base to the next level." Among the many issues the chief must tackle, his first in line is the safety of Airmen especially with the 101 Critical Days of Summer right ahead of us. "As the command chief, I value and want to emphasize the 'I Can Save My Own Life' policy," he said. "I don't want to lose any members on my watch. I think Airmen should embrace the policy like you would your own family, because that's the kind of people you could save by understanding the concept." No matter the circumstance safety is paramount, he said. As summer approaches, the need for personal responsibility is compounded. "Regardless of what time of year it is, we should always be conscious of one another's safety," added the command chief. "On Guam, it's more like 365 critical days of summer. We should be constantly increasing our awareness to the many safety threats out there." It doesn't matter if you're permanent party or deployed here, the 'I Can Save My Own Life' policy applies to everyone. "It's just as important for the deployed folks to understand the concept," said Chief Andree. "Regardless of where you're from, losing one Airmen to stupidity is one too many." Along with emphasizing the 'I Can Save My Own Life' policy, Chief Andree wants Andersen members to always be mindful of why we're here. "We are at war and we need to be in that mindset to be at our best," Chief Andree said. "Airmen need to educate and motivate others who are not in that mindset." Chief Andree grew up in Aberdeen, South Dakota. He entered the Air Force in May 1980. His background includes various duties as Security Forces, Instructor, First Sergeant, and Group Superintendent. He held special duties in Presidential Security, National Security Agency, and the Air Force Technical Applications Center. His assignments include bases in Nebraska, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Maryland, and Florida. His service in oversees assignments include Alaska, Germany, Portugal, and Turkey and directly supported Operations VIGILANT WARRIOR, NORTHERN WATCH, and PROVIDE COMFORT
