Ground Controlled Approach (GCA) is an air traffic control method used to guide an aircraft to a safe landing during adverse weather, equipment failure, or other challenging circumstances.
The system utilizes two types of radar: an Airport Surveillance Radar (ASR) and a Precision Approach Radar (PAR). The ASR scans 360 degrees around the unit to monitor air traffic, while the highly accurate PAR measures the precise altitude and bearing of an aircraft as it approaches the runway.
An air traffic controller on the ground communicates information and course corrections to the pilot through a two-way radio to ensure a safe landing.
