Air Force Cross, 2002
Pararescueman Jason Cunningham served on a quick-reaction MH-47E helicopter rescuing American troops surrounded by al-Qaeda fighters on Takur Ghar Mountain in Afghanistan. When enemy fire forced down the MH-47E, Cunningham provided medical assistance to the wounded despite freezing temperatures and heavy enemy gunfire. When a fire forced the evacuation of the downed helicopter, he pulled the wounded to a safer position, crossing the line of enemy fire seven times. Mortally wounded by enemy gunfire, Cunningham continued providing medical assistance until he died seven hours later.
