SA-4 Ganef

Note: This item is currently in storage.

The Soviet, now Russian, SA-4 (NATO designation "Ganef") is a medium- to high-altitude surface-to-air missile developed in the late 1950s by the Lyulev OKB design bureau. Fielded in 1967, it became fully operational in 1969.

Four solid booster rockets that burn for about 15 seconds launch the missile. When a speed of Mach 1 is reached, the booster rockets separate and fall away, and the kerosene-fueled ramjet takes over. With a range of more than 30 miles and the ability to reach an altitude of about 80,000 feet, the SA-4 is an effective weapon against larger aircraft.
