The purpose of the Laser Acquisition Device (L.A.D.) is to give the pilot the location of a ground target that is being illuminated by a laser designator. This is done by detecting the laser energy return for the illuminated direction of the target. By mounting the detector, optical system and display on the pilot's helmet, targets may be sighted over a large viewing area. (U.S. Air Force photo)
