Description of Home School Day Programs

Following is a description of programs for the 2012 Home School Days. A map of activity locations will be available closer to the event.

 Things with Wings Things with Wings
Located in the Early Years Gallery. During this pre-school story time program, children will explore a variety of items that have wings and listen to stories about different kinds of wings. Children will then make a small paper boomerang that can really fly!

Time: 10:45-11:30 a.m. and 2-2:45 p.m.
Ages: 3 to 5 (pre-schoolers and pre-K)
Cost: Free
Youngsters may attend either the morning or afternoon session, but not both. An adult must stay with the student in the classroom area.

 We All Fall Down We All Fall Down
Located in the Korean War Gallery. Children will learn about the force of gravity as they experience a variety of hands-on activities that include making their own gyrocopters and parachutes.

Time: 10:30 -11:30 a.m. and 1:45-2:45 p.m.
Ages: 5 to 6 (kindergarten)
Cost: Free
Youngsters may attend either the morning or afternoon session, but not both. An adult may stay with the student in the classroom area.

 Get Charged Get Charged
Located in the Cold War Gallery. Children will get charged up about electricity as they learn the concepts of magnetism and electricity through fun activities that will have them seeing (and feeling) what we are talking about! Presented by a scientist from the Wright-Patterson AFB "Wizards of Wright" program.

Time: 10:15-11:15 a.m. and 1:30-2:30 p.m.
Ages: 6 to 8 (1st and 2nd grade)
Cost: Free
Youngsters may attend either the morning or afternoon session, but not both.

 Bird's Eye View Bird's Eye View
Located in the Cold War Gallery. Children will learn about the fascinating world of "overhead" imagery -- beginning with aerial photography by pigeons, kites and rockets to the modern-era spy planes and satellites! Children also will be making their own satellite model.

Time: 10-11 a.m. and 1:15-2:15 p.m.
Ages: 7 to 9 (2nd and 3rd grades)
Cost: Free
Youngsters may attend either the morning or afternoon session, but not both.

 Fun with Chemistry Fun with Chemistry 
Located in the Learning Center. Students will discover the fun, the relevance and the challenge of chemistry through a discovery approach. The students will experience real chemistry and learn that chemistry happens everywhere, every day. Each student will have the opportunity to make a polymer that they can take with them! Presented by a scientist from the Wright-Patterson AFB "Wizards of Wright" program.

Time: 10:30 -11:30 a.m. and 1:30-2:30 p.m.
Ages: 8 to 10 (3rd and 4th grades)
Cost: Free
Youngsters may attend either the morning or afternoon session, but not both.

 Hot Air Science Hot Air Science
Located in the center of the second building. Children will discover the excitement of lighter-than-air flight as they explore buoyancy and density principles while working in teams to build and launch six-foot tall tissue paper hot air balloons! Everyone is invited to watch the launches take place during the last half hour of class!

Time: 10:30-noon and 1:30-3 p.m.
Ages: 9 to 12 (4th to 6th grades)
Cost: Free

 Eyes in Space Eyes in Space: Air Force Spy Satellites
Located in Carney Auditorium. In September of 2011, the National Reconnaissance Office announced the declassification of two of its major imagery satellite systems. Formerly top-secret operations, three of these satellites are now on display at our museum. Learn about these and other spy satellites as you hear about the incredible "technology jumps" of the last 50 years!

Time: 10:30-11:45 a.m.
Ages: 11+ (although all ages are welcome, even un-chaperoned adults!)

 How the Wright Brothers Invented the Airplane How the Wright Brothers Invented the Airplane
Located in Carney Auditorium. People have always dreamed of flight, and many attempts to do so were recorded. So why were the Wright brothers successful in 1903? Hear about this incredible family and learn the steps they took to invent the world's first, heavier-than-air, powered flying machine! Presented by an Education Specialist from the National Park Service.

Time: 1:30-2:30 p.m.
Ages: 11+ (although all ages are welcome, even un-chaperoned adults!)

 Fuel Cells Fuel Cells 
Located in the Cold War Gallery. Students will discover the exciting field of hydrogen technology as they learn the science surrounding the fuel cell. They will explore the possibilities of this clean energy source as they generate hydrogen fuel through the process of electrolysis to power fuel cell cars! Presented by the Wright-Patterson AFB "Wizards of Wright" program.

Time: 10-11 a.m. and 1:15-2:15 p.m.
Ages: 11 to 14 (6th to 8th grades)
Cost: Free

 Take Flight with Aero Lab Take Flight with Aero Lab
Located on the balcony in the Cold War Gallery. Students will explore the concepts of force and motion, potential and kinetic energy and centripetal force while building and testing a tethered, rise-off-ground rubber-band powered airplane! Students will work in teams during the flight tests.

Time: 10:15-11:15 a.m.
Ages: 12 to 15 (7th to 9th grades)
Cost: $5 material fee (payable at the classroom at class time)

 Advanced Rocketry Advanced Rocketry
Located on the balcony in the Cold War Gallery. It IS rocket science! Students will look at the physics behind rocketry and explore such concepts as the laws of motion, rocket mass ratio, engine exhaust velocity, specific impulse and more during this exciting approach to the field of rocketry. Class will conclude by exploring the state of the art and future rocket performance. Presented by a scientist from the Wright-Patterson AFB Educational Outreach Office speaker program.

Time: 2-3 p.m.
Ages: 14 to 18 (9th to 12th grades)

 Guided Tours

 
Guided Tours
Meet in Kettering Hall. A guide-led tour of the museum's major galleries: Early Years, Air Power, Korea, Southeast Asia, the Cold War and Space. Hear stories about the people and planes that have made history!

Time: 10-11:30 a.m. and 1:15-2:45 p.m.
Ages: 9 to 18 (although the whole family is welcome)
Cost: Free
Youngsters may attend either the morning or afternoon session, but not both.

 Scavenger Hunts















 
Scavenger Hunts
Begin near the entrance to the Early Years Gallery. Scavenger hunts may be picked up anytime between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Age appropriate informational scavenger hunts will be available for youngsters ages 6 to 18. Younger children may accompany siblings but will not receive their own scavenger hunt. These tours are self-directed and require adult participation at all grade levels. Each student will receive a questionnaire, pencil and cardboard (to use as a writing surface). Pencils and cardboard are to be returned upon completion of the tour. Approximate time required to complete the tour is one to two hours. These self-directed tours are a good fill-in between programs or as a substitute for a scheduled program when needed. Answer keys will be available at the scavenger hunt distribution table until 4 p.m. for those wanting to check their answers.

 Aerospace Demo Stations


 
Aerospace Demo Stations
Various locations. No reservations required. Just stop by several demo stations to learn and experience some fun facts about aerospace science! Appropriate for all age groups.

Time: 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 1:30-4 p.m.
Ages: Everyone
Cost: Free
