Winged Boot: Escape and Evasion in World War II

DAYTON, Ohio - Evasion purses: 1) original French francs and carrying purse (marked "F" for use in France) issued by M.I.9 to American flyers through MIS-X. The money could be used by downed flyers to reward assistance or provide bribes. 2)The “FBD” on this map case indicates it covered France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. 3) The “N” on this evasion purse indicates it covered Norway and Sweden. 4) Aircrews did not open evasion kits unless they were to be used. Winged Boot: Escape and Evasion in World War II

DAYTON, Ohio - In the photo: members of the French Resistance created these false identification papers for 2nd Lt. Ralph K. Patton. German occupation forces required all French citizens to carry an identity card. This paper was required specifically for travel in the coastal region of France. French citizens carried this certificate of work to prevent removal to forced labor camps in Germany. The War Department sent these telegrams to Lt Patton's mother. The first reported he was missing in action, and the second reported his return to active duty. Lt. Patton, like many other successful USAAF evaders in Europe, bought his custom-made "Winged Boot" at Hobson and Sons in London shortly after he arrived back in England. USAAF airmen normally wore this prized symbol under the left-hand coat lapel since it was not an authorized uniform item. Return with Honor: American Prisoners of War in Southeast Asia

DAYTON, Ohio - In this case is a life ring from the SS Mayaguez. The ship was launched in 1944, and beginning in 1965 sailed a regular route from Hong Kong to Thailand and Singapore carrying supplies in support of U.S. forces in Southeast Asia. The Mayaguez was scrapped in 1979. USAF pararescueman Wayne Fisk wore this beret during the Mayaguez operation. He was on the last helicopter to leave Koh Tang. This instrument panel stopped a bullet. The panel is from an HH-53 helicopter that attempted under fire to rescue the crew of another helicopter downed in the opening minutes of the Koh Tang operation. (U.S. Air Force photo)

Return with Honor: American Prisoners of War in Southeast Asia

DAYTON, Ohio - This stone marked the grave of Col. Norman Schmidt in North Vietnam, and was returned to the U.S. with Schmidt's remains in 1974. Schmidt was shot down and captured in 1966. In 1967, he was taken from his cell, and fellow POWs never saw him again. After the war, the North Vietnamese showed U.S. experts graves of Americans who had died in captivity. One was marked by this stone—the initials "N.S." are for "Norman Schmidt. Also in the display case are bumper stickers, handouts and other items distributed to the public to remind them of those who never came home. POW/MIA advocates sponsored races in cities across the U.S. to remind the nation of unaccounted-for MIAs. DAYTON, Ohio - Protocol document issued to POWs on Jan. 30, 1973, to advise them of the details of release procedures. Capt. Ed Mechenbier used it to draw plans for his "dream house.” Playing cards issued by the Red Cross for use on the flight from Vietnam to Clark Air Base in the Philippines. The flight took about four hours. Returning POWs were given updates on a world from which they had been absent for years. These books and tapes helped them catch up. Among the events most of them missed were the first moon landings and other important events of the late 1960s. POWs even received a pamphlet explaining the latest slang expressions. DAYTON, Ohio - Articles in this display include a pre-addressed postcard to Ton Duc Thang, President of North Vietnam, to enlist his support in determining the fate of Lt. Larry Potts. Despite repeated appeals like this one, North Vietnam remained unsympathetic. POW/MIA bracelets and buttons reminded the public of the plight of prisoners in Southeast Asia. Many people wore the bracelets until the fate of their POW/MIA was resolved—and then sent the bracelet to the returned POW if he was alive. Also included are articles used as late as 1975 by the Volunteers for POW/MIAs of Dayton, Ohio. The black flag is the official POW/MIA flag, which is flown six times a year at designated federal sites. DAYTON, Ohio - A piece of barbed wire was recovered from the Son Tay camp site in 1995. The wire was on one of the walls between the guard towers. The patches on this informal “party suit” depict the close association among Son Tay Raiders. The official Raider patch shows a lightning-fast “bounce” into and out of a prison compound. The unofficial patch shows a mushroom, and the legend KITD/FOHS—referring to the raid’s extreme secrecy. DAYTON, Ohio - The CIA made this detailed model of the Son Tay prison camp after studying reconnaissance photographs. The raiders used the model in planning and for memorizing the camp’s layout. The model was called BARBARA, after a USAF secretary, Barbara L. Strosnider, who worked very long days supporting planning for the raid.
