French Altimeter Indicator

This French altimeter indicator was donated by Mr. Sol Wise, who was assigned to the French 111th Squadron as an observer. He had at least two victories and was awarded the Croix de Guerre in August 1918 and Fourragere in September 1918. (U.S. Air Force photo)

Service Coat

Maj. Jack M. Ilfrey, a World War II USAAF ace with eight victories, wore this service coat. The "winged boot" insignia on the left pocket flap is an unofficial badge for downed airmen who escaped from behind enemy lines. Maj. Mandolin

SSgt. Ernest F. Smith taught himself to play this mandolin while he was a prisoner of the Germans during World War II. He got it in a trade with a guard and used music to boost camp morale. Smith was shot down in May 1944 and was freed at the end of the war in May 1945. He was a member of the 452nd Heavy Bomb Group. (U.S. Air Force photo)

TMU-27/M LOX Cart

The TMU-27/M 50-gallon liquid oxygen (LOX) tank was used to refill aircraft LOX systems (for crew breathing at high altitude). This type of cart entered USAF service in 1969 and also was designed for use with argon and nitrogen. The use of liquid oxygen as a source of breathable oxygen was introduced in the late 1950s as a means of saving space and weight over the gaseous oxygen systems then in use in Air Force aircraft.
