Learn about 'whirlybirds' during Family Day on June 21 Published June 4, 2014 By Sarah Swan National Museum of the U.S. Air Force DAYTON, Ohio -- Celebrate the anniversary of the first flight of the world's first practical helicopter by learning about the aircraft that can go backwards, forwards, spin and even hover in place during Family Day from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on June 21 at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force. Designed for children and adults of all ages, Family Day offers several hands-on opportunities for all to enjoy. Aerospace demonstration stations, located throughout the museum's galleries, teach fun and simple aerospace principles, such as the history and uses of helicopters, information on how to fly a helicopter, and demonstrations of remote-controlled helicopters in flight (inside the museum in the event area in the second building) and more. "Storytime" begins at 11:30 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. in the Early Years Gallery. Preschool and primary-grade children are invited to sit under the wings of airplanes and listen to stories about helicopters and make their own paper gyrocopter. In addition, visitors will have the opportunity to hear fascinating stories of adventures from veteran Air Force helicopter pilots All activities are free! No advanced reservations are necessary. It is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day). Admission and parking are free.
