In September 1917, Lt. Harold R. Harris, who had recently completed Ground School at the University of California Berkeley, was en-route to Italy, to assist in establishing the 8th Aviation Instruction Center for the Allied Expeditionary Force in Foggia. In September 1917, Lt. Harold R. Harris, who had recently completed Ground School at the University of California Berkeley, was en-route to Italy, to assist in establishing the 8th Aviation Instruction Center for the Allied Expeditionary Force in Foggia. Before leaving France, Harris wrote a detailed letter to his family, asking for them to send him several things, including new officer's insignia and magazines. He even dropped a few Christmas gift hints -- he wished for a Vest Pocket Kodak, a Corona typewriter and "a whole box of Hershey's plain (not nut) milk chocolate."
